Day two of our team-up with Centrica and British Gas saw us heading to Northam Burrows beach in Bideford, Devon.
Another ten engineers turned up to give their time to help this beach clean. Over three hours the volunteers scaled the rocks and pebbles to find the litter that had washed up after the very high tide the night before.
We’ve cleaned this beach many times in the past, and every time our volunteers are always surprised that a beach that look so clean on first glance, can have some much litter on it hiding. To date, we have cleared up a total of 195.44 kilos with the help of 551 volunteers on this beach alone.
We found all sorts of things hidden between the rocks, from old plastic packaging, to metal hooks, to surfing gear.
Something we always find a lot of on this particular beach is ghost gear. Ghost gear is another term for abandoned fishing gear. An absolutely lethal form of plastic pollution, this type of plastic litters beaches up and down the coastline, causing untold destruction to marine life.
After almost three hours our volunteers had collected up an impressive 11 bags of litter weighing in at 22.78 kilos. Combined with our Falmouth clean the day before, British Gas engineers collected up a total of 34.37 kilos across both beaches.
