Northam Burrows, Beach Clean!

We visited Northam Burrows Beach in Westward Ho! for another beach clean with the amazing 1st Torrington Brownies. This is an annual event we have been holding since 2021, and we were thrilled to return for a third year.

We were joined by volunteers of all ages, to help tackle the litter on the beach. In 2022 we had 25 volunteers, in 2023 we had 63, and this year we had 72 volunteers. It is amazing to see how this clean-up event has grown in popularity year on year.

A diverse group of ages from the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers came together for a beach clean-up. We were pleased to support these young women in their efforts to help the environment and their community.

Westward Ho! beach, first appears spotless and free of litter, but it didn’t take us long to discover rubbish that had been swept up by the sea and hidden among the rocks. We collected a total of 27 bags of rubbish after an hour of cleaning as well as a whole pot of glass. We also discovered some particularly intriguing items, including:

  • Lego bricks
  • Frisbee
  • Buckets and spades
  • Ghost gear
  • The broken bases of traffic cones
  • A pillow

Thank you to the ProCook Bideford store staff who helped to organise this event, and a huge thank you to all the children and parents who came to give their time and help us with our war on plastic pollution!

If you would like to sign up your group for a beach clean or local litter pick, please contact us at hello@lifesabeach.org we would love to hear from you!
